About The Robot and The Bluebird

Based on the children’s book by David Lucas, with specially created animations by Victor Craven and new music by composer Raph Clarkson, performed by Britten Sinfonia, the performance tells the story of a Robot with a broken heart who gives his remaining strength to save the life of a little bird, and finds meaning and purpose in doing so.

The book explores themes of empathy and kindness, friendship, seasons and technology and can be explored through the English, Art and PSHE curriculum.

This show is suitable for all ages and designed especially for children aged 4 to 7.

What does the performance involve?

The performance will have a 12-piece ensemble of musicians from Britten Sinfonia and a presenter, Sheena Masson. There will also be live animations projected behind the performers based on the illustrations from the book. It will introduce the children to live instruments with the chance to join in with singing, body percussion, and a guided moment of calm.

The performance lasts approximately 1 hour and was designed for children aged 4 to 8.

How can you prepare for the performance?

The concert was designed to be sung by children so we ask that teachers commit to attending a 1-hour twilight CPD session with workshop leader and presenter, Sheena Masson. The sessions will be held between 16:30 and 17:30 on Monday 6 November at Trumpington Meadows Primary School, Cambridge.

Please contact learning@brittensinfonia.com if you are unable to attend the CPD session but would still like to bring your pupils to the concert

To request tickets for your school, please complete our short booking form here. Tickets are £3 per pupils and accompanying adults go free.

more about Britten Sinfonia

Britten Sinfonia is a different kind of orchestra. It is defined not by the traditional figurehead of a principal conductor, but by the dynamic and democratic meeting of its outstanding individual players and the broad range of their collaborators.

Rooted in the East of England, where it is the only professional orchestra working throughout the region, Britten Sinfonia also has a national and international reputation as one of today’s finest ensembles. It is renowned for its adventurous programming and stunningly high-quality performances, and equally for its record of commissioning new music, nurturing new composing talent, and inspiring schoolchildren, hospital patients and communities across the East of England.
